BA (Hons) Theatre (Performance and Production) is a creative theatre performance and production course, designed for students who see their own processes of creating original theatre work as an empowering starting point for a wider process of understanding theatre and performance in theoretical and contextual terms. The programme is vocational in that students who have successfully completed the programme can expect to have amassed the requisite range of skills necessary to pursue a professional career in contemporary theatre-performance making. Students’ vocational and creative skills are focused towards understanding the processes of production – technical (sound, lights, digital), design and management – alongside performance and devising skills. Merging these sets of skills requires a cross-disciplinary and holistic approach to making new theatre and, as such, the course does not attempt to offer specialisation in any single technical area. The particular vocational commitment of this three-year undergraduate programme is underlined by the opportunity to undertake an extended placement in the third year, during which students work with industry professionals in creative production.
