Product Design Innovation (PDI) offers the student broad exposure to the exciting world of Engineering Design and manufacturing techniques through a mixture of problem based learning, practical work, projects and coursework. PDI is delivered using the CDIO (Conceive – Design – Implement – Operate) problem based learning teaching approach and places emphasis on providing industrially and business relevant, transferable skills, supported by a solid scientific and mathematical foundation. The integrated foundation year leads to a range of diverse STEM degrees, it covers broad topics including: physics, mathematics, electronics and computing, and the practical application of these to engineering disciplines through design-build-test challenges. These practical CDIO (conceive-design-implement-operate) tasks offer students an opportunity to work in groups to combine their skills and solve real engineering problems. In addition to core subjects, our module on ‘Research, Communication and Employability Skills’ will provide you with self-learning, planning, report writing and presentation skills, while ‘IT and Computing Skills’ will introduce the ways that computing can be used to construct, solve and analyse mathematical problems and to programme microcontrollers.
