The BA (Hons) Performing Arts (Theatre and Dance) is a single-honours, three-year programme, which is offered in full-time mode only. It is an intensive, highly practical, academic programme, which is designed for students who see their own engagement with creative original theatre work as an empowering starting point for a wider process of understanding theatre and performance in theoretic and contextual terms. The course encourages the key interdisciplinary relationship between theatre and dance, in which students are offered a particular skills focus on movement and choreography as a complement to their theatre work, as well as certain targeted modules in the body and physical theatre. A key aim of the programme is vocational in that students who successfully complete it can expect to have amassed the requisite range of skills necessary to pursue a professional career in contemporary theatre, dance and performance making. In addition, students will gain transferable skills such as critical thinking and expression, creative problem-solving, project management and a knowledge of applied methodologies. Vocational commitments are underlined by the opportunity to undertake a series of ‘professional development’ modules during the third year, including an optional work placement module.
