Would you enjoy working as part of a multi-professional team and caring for people at one of the most critical times during their hospital stay? This course will be of interest if you want a rewarding career as a healthcare professional in the operating department. Operating department practitioners are key members of the surgical team, who respond to the physical and psychological needs of patients, throughout their surgical experience. You’ll spend 60% of your time in clinical practice gaining hands-on experience and 40% will be spent in the classroom, including using our high specification clinical skills labs with interactive simulators creating realistic learning experiences. You will learn through a variety of settings including lectures, demonstrations, group activities (eg. discussion, role-play), personal development planning (PDP), problem solving, case studies and web-based resources. Learning in the clinical environment is central to the course and integral to your development. Therefore in this setting you will be observing, shadowing, practising under supervision and participating in daily activity. On successful completion of this course, you will have a qualification for employment within operating departments and are eligible for statutory registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). You could go onto a career in the NHS or private practice and there are good opportunities to work abroad with a UK ODP degree.
