Russian and Portuguese (4 years)

Expertise in modern languages has never been more important as the United Kingdom forges a new relationship with its European partners and seeks to develop its trading and cultural ties throughout the world. This Joint Honours course combines the study of Russian language and culture with Portuguese, offering a window to a much wider world. Russia continues to assert itself as a powerful political and economic force, making Russian expertise vital in a range of professions. Portuguese is the seventh most widely spoken language in the world. The rise of the Brazilian and Angolan economies and recent major sporting events in Brazil mean Portuguese speakers are increasingly in demand. You can begin to study one language from scratch or build on existing experience. Both departments offer a lively, friendly and supportive environment. You will divide your year abroad between a Russian-speaking and a Portuguese-speaking environment. There are a wide range of placements to choose from. For example you could study in a university, teach English or work in a multinational company or non-governmental organisation.
