French and Spanish (4 years)

Expertise in modern languages has never been more important as the United Kingdom forges a new relationship with its European partners and seeks to develop its trading and cultural ties throughout the world. The Joint Honours degree in French and Spanish enables you to explore two of the oldest and most central cultures in Europe, as well as two of the most widely spoken languages in the world. French is the first language of some 90 million speakers, while francophone countries offer diverse and stimulating cultures for study. Spanish is the second most widely spoken European language in the world and is the second language of the USA. Both departments encourage strong synergy between research and teaching, resulting in a vibrant learning environment as staff respond to new research in their teaching. In language classes, you will develop speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation skills, using a range of textbooks, media and internet resources. You will divide your third year between a French-speaking country and a Spanish-speaking country.
