Expertise in modern languages has never been more important as the United Kingdom forges a new relationship with its European partners and seeks to develop its trading and cultural ties throughout the world. The Joint Honours degree enables you to develop post A-level French alongside Russian, either as a beginner or building on prior qualifications. You will gain knowledge of the key approaches and concepts for linguistic, literary, cultural and historical analysis. In language classes, you will develop speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation skills using a range of textbooks, media and internet resources. The French course offers a broad range of French studies through the study of language, history, literature and culture from medieval literature to French cinema. Students of Russian are introduced to a linguistic and cultural tradition spanning some of Europe's most important writers, literary developments and ideological trends. You will spend half of your third year in a French-speaking country and the remaining half in a Russian-speaking country.
