Expertise in modern languages has never been more important as the United Kingdom forges a new relationship with its European partners and seeks to develop its trading and cultural ties throughout the world. The Joint Honours degree in French and Portuguese enables you to explore two of the oldest cultures in Europe, as well as opening a gateway to exploring societies worldwide. French is the first language of some 90 million speakers around the world, while francophone countries offer diverse and stimulating cultures for study. Portuguese is the seventh most widely spoken language in the world. The rise of the Brazilian and Angolan economies, and recent major sporting events in Brazil, mean Portuguese speakers are increasingly in demand. In language classes you will develop speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation skills, using a range of textbooks, media and internet resources. You will divide your third year between a French speaking country and a Portuguese speaking country, undertaking study or work placements.
