French and German (4 years)

Expertise in modern languages has never been more important as the United Kingdom forges a new relationship with its European partners and seeks to develop its trading and cultural ties throughout the world. This Joint Honours degree enables you to develop post A-level knowledge and skills in French language while also studying German, either as a beginner or building on existing knowledge. You will achieve a high degree of fluency and accuracy in written and oral registers in both languages. The course offers a broad range of studies including the study of both languages and the history, literature and culture of countries where those languages are spoken. French at Bristol has particular strengths in the relationship between visual, musical and literary cultures, while German has strengths in social and cultural history and linguistics. You will spend half of your third year in a French-speaking country and the remaining half in a German-speaking country. In language classes, you will develop speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation skills using a range of textbooks, media and internet resources.
