Fashion and Dress History

For students with a keen interest in contemporary fashion and historical dress, this course develops an understanding of its changing significance from the late eighteenth century until the present day. This course focuses on ways in which different social, national, cultural and gender groups construct and project their identities through their dress, considering dress in broader design, historical and visual culture contexts. An assessed work placement gives students the opportunity to gain experience in a local museum, gallery, archive or creative service. The course has links to local and national museums and students have access to the university's world-class research resources including the Design Archives, Textile and Dress Teaching Collection and Screen Archive South East.
