The English programme is dedicated to the study of a wide range of literary works from classical antiquity to the present day. Our long established degree has evolved in accordance with the changing interests and requirements of our students and with the flourishing research activities of our staff. As a student on the English degree you will become acquainted with a diverse and exciting array of literary works. We offer popular options in women’s writing, Gothic fiction, children’s literature, film adaptation and contemporary poetry in addition to a series of modules which build on our close links with the Creative Writing team. The first and second year of the programme are made up of core units in the study of poetry, prose and fiction. These are supplemented by ‘cluster’ modules which focus on the close study of contemporary writing and on literary works that have proved inspiring for the course team. We also have modules dedicated to scholarship and employability. In the third year of the programme you choose modules which best suit your developing literary interests. You also write a dissertation on a topic of your choosing under the supervision of a subject specialist.
