Mechanical and Materials Engineering

This programme is based on the idea that the performance of a device or machine cannot be de-coupled from the materials that are used to make it. It is the job of a mechanical engineer to ensure that the best material is used in a given application, in order to maximise the performance of each component. This is often difficult to do, as mechanical engineers have limited knowledge of materials, and how to best exploit their structure and properties. With knowledge of both Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering, graduates from this course have the advantage of being able to maximise the performance of devices or machines by exploiting the properties of advanced materials.
