Biomedical Materials Science

Our BMedSc Biomedical Materials Science programme will teach you how novel biomaterials for medical application are developed, with a major focus on tissue engineering, orthopaedic and dental biomaterials. Hip replacements, dental implants, tissue engineering scaffolds and pacemakers are just some of the examples of biomaterials that are increasingly important for the well being of our ageing population. This multidisciplinary course is one of few in the UK to cover both materials and biological science equally, meaning you will develop a broad knowledge base in both crucial areas, allowing you to choose from a wider variety of career options in the field of biomedical sciences after graduation. Based at the Biomaterials Unit of the Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry, this is the only course of its kind to be taught in a hospital. You will therefore benefit from direct input by clinicians into the course content, ensuring the clinical relevance of our teaching and research. A number of our students will undertake a one year industrial placement with a medical device company after their second year which is supported by our Careers Network. Others will have the opportunity to strengthen their skills through a summer research placement, either at our research unit or externally. In 2017, the results of the National Student Survey (NSS) showed that 100% of our students were satisfied with the quality of the course.
