English Language and Linguistics with Advanced German

Language is, arguably, our species’ most distinctive trait – it is what makes us human – so, the study of language is not just of academic interest (fascinating though language is in itself) but is a way to gain insight into the human mind and society. The ‘English Language and Linguistics’ degree course at Bedfordshire gives you the opportunity to explore the nature and complexity of the English Language. You will gain an understanding of its structure, of how it works and how it is used in a range of social and professional contexts. Consequently, a degree in English Language and Linguistics is a great choice if you are planning a career where analytical or communication skills are needed. Language analysis is scientific in its rigour and the creativity of language use sits comfortably in the humanities. Consequently, Linguistics crosses the divide between the Arts and the Sciences and is therefore a really good choice for those who enjoy both. There are many professions which directly apply theoretical and practical knowledge of linguistics: education, speech therapy, media, marketing to name but a few. In choosing to combine the study of English Language and Linguistics with an advanced language, you are enhancing your competence in intercultural communication and understanding as well as developing communication skills in a second (or third) language that is a considerable advantage for both employment and travel. This course is designed for students who are learning the target language and is not suitable for native speakers of that language.
