Information Technology (with Industry Experience)

**Course overview**: Information technology (IT) is an integral part of our lives. Working with IT involves finding technological solutions to everyday communication needs - if you have a logical mind, enjoy problem solving and prefer working with people and packages (rather than programming) then the IT sector could be an ideal career for you. The skills developed on this degree, which includes a placement year, are highly sought after by employers and will build a strong foundation for working in industry. You explore the complex body of knowledge relating to computer science at the current boundaries of research and development. You develop skills in project management, problem solving, rapid systems development, using specialist tools, working closely with users, and professional ethics and legal issues within IT. You will spend one year learning and developing your skills through work experience. You will have a dedicated work placement officer and the University's award-winning careers service to assist you with applying for a placement. Advice is also available on job hunting and networking. Employers are often invited to the University to meet you and present you with opportunities for work placements. By taking a work placement year you gain experience favoured by graduate recruiters and develop your technical skillset. You also obtain the transferable skills required in any professional environment, including communication, negotiation, teamwork, leadership, organisation, confidence, self-reliance, problem-solving, being able to work under pressure, and commercial awareness. Successful students will merit relevant exemption from British Computer Society professional examinations. **After the course**: Most graduates will seek careers in companies directly or indirectly linked to computing, web, digital media, journalism, media, games or animation. However, in addition to these digital industries your skills and knowledge will also be relevant to the automobile, manufacturing, health and charitable industries, to name just a few.
