Education and Welsh

The BA (Hons) Education and Welsh joint honours degree will enable students to specialise in both subjects, developing a range and mix of skills and knowledge which will enhance your future career prospects. The programme is intended for students who wish to develop their understanding and command of the Welsh Language and consider a broad spectrum of education theory and practice. Designed for First Language Welsh speakers, our BA (Hons) Education and Welsh programme considers: - Education in a wide context, not just within formal primary and secondary school settings, but also Further/Higher Education, social services, local and national government, and education within the community. - The Welsh language, its literature and culture. Students will develop their proficiency in both written and oral work, and expand their vocabulary and command of the Welsh language through discussion of Welsh literature and culture from history right through to the present day. - Attitudes towards minority languages, the aims and success of language legislation in the 20th and 21st century, the factors that influence language regeneration, syntax and linguistics, the role of the translator, and good practice in translation. Employability and study skills are embedded throughout the programme, with all students having the opportunity to undertake optional work placement modules in years two and three of the degree. A degree in Education and Welsh will equip students with the skills necessary for fulfilling professional careers in either Education or the Welsh medium sector. It affords excellent preparation for students wishing to undertake further training in primary, secondary or further education in the medium of Welsh, and opens up doors to a wide range of careers. In addition, with our unique emphasis on learning in a digital age, students will be well equipped to utilise cutting edge learning technologies central to current trends in education theory and practice. • As part of the degree, all students will be given the option of studying towards the Cambridge English CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults), at a substantially reduced cost to students. • The degree is taught by innovative experts who have strong national and international links. • A variety of global summer programmes are available including two-week study and cultural tours to China, Vietnam and Thailand. • Typical salaries for qualified primary and secondary school teachers are in the region of £22,467-£33,160, depending on experience.
