Ancient History and French

Studying an Ancient History and French with a Year Abroad enables you to combine an exploration of distant yet influential civilisations, with study of French language, culture and fiction, as well as vocational elements of translation and language teaching. During your year in France, you will either study at a university, teach in a school or work in a business. Your attention will traverse major periods of time and diverse subjects: from the emergence of Athenian democracy and the glories of renaissance Italy, to the unique cultural environment of Paris and its evolution from the nineteenth century to the present day. This four-year degree helps to provide a wealth of inspiring career opportunities thanks to numerous transferable and vocational skills which are highly valued by employers. Ancient History achieved an overall satisfaction rating of 95% in the 2017 National Student Survey (NSS). Some 94% of graduates employed or in further study 6 months after graduating (Destination of Leavers from HE survey 2015) and 70% of our students achieved a 1st class or 2.1 honours degree in 2017/18. Early modules offer a wide subject choice, allowing in depth study of Greek and Roman worlds alongside French language and culture. This range gives you the scope to learn, discover and narrow your interests. Based on our stunning Singleton Park campus overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula, you will have the ability to tailor your degree according to your interests as you progress. Later studies may be shaped by work placement projects and further teaching experience can be developed by leading workshops for the South West Wales Reaching Wider Partnership. Students typically develop oral and writing skills through presenting ideas in different formats. Assessment is conducted through seminars, tutorials and group presentations, as well as independent study. Teaching is informed by a vibrant and supportive research environment that unites academics, postgraduates and visiting scholars around shared subject matter. “I was fortunate to spend a year as a teaching assistant in Nice, living with a local family. I thoroughly enjoyed my year abroad and cannot emphasise enough the benefits to be gained. Studying a foreign language opens the door to a whole world of new possibilities, and their value in the jobs market shouldn't be underestimated.” – Sophie Williams. Graduates have progressed to careers in sectors such as education, heritage, business, media, politics and humanitarian services. Employers have included Mercedes Benz, English Heritage and St Fagans National History Museum.
