Ancient and Medieval History

If you are interested in studying the Greek and Roman worlds, including history, literature, philosophy, archaeology and art in order to shine a light on the ancient civilizations that have shaped our modern world then this is the degree for you. Our Ancient and Medieval History degree programme offers you the opportunity to examine civilisations that may appear distant, but remain influential in our own time. You can discover the continuities and change from the emergence of Athenian democracy to the glories of renaissance Italy; from the expansion of the Roman Empire to the Christian crusades of the Middle Ages; and from the great epics of Homer to the sublime poetry of Dante. Our Ancient and Medieval History degree programme also offers you the opportunity to • Take module Ancient and Historic Places, a study trip or field project focusing on a specific region or place in your second year. • Take a work-placement through the “Literacy through Latin” project to teach Latin to primary and secondary school children. • Gain teaching experience by leading workshops for the South West Wales Reaching Wider Partnership. 91% of our graduates are employed within six months of graduating according to the latest DLHE 2015 figures. Our Employability Officer supports our students with information and advice which is backed up by the University’s Careers Service and Work Placement Team. All students have access to events, workshops and employer talks, including an annual conference for students in June to support final year students with the transition into the world of work. A key feature is that you have the option to study abroad for a semester as part of your degree. You can either choose to go East and study in Hong Kong, China or Singapore or West and study in North America or Canada. This Semester Abroad opportunity costs no additional tuition fees; this means that you have the chance to study at an overseas institution without having to pay any further fee on top of the tuition fee you are already paying. You will, however, have to pay for your flight costs, accommodation, living expenses and any additional expenditure. Set in parkland overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the breathtaking Gower Peninsula, the University's location is captivating. With 15,921 students and 2,510 staff, Swansea's multicultural campus community provides a global perspective and opportunities to gain skills that last a lifetime.
