Psychology is concerned with understanding all aspects of human behaviour and a person’s underlying thoughts, feelings and motivations. You will be expected to have a great interest in investigating and analysing how humans think, feel and behave. The Foundation Year will encourage you to develop further your own problem solving, communication and interpersonal skills. The Foundation Year is delivered at Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College or Newcastle-Under-Lyme College and follows the academic calendar of the college. The course is modular and consists of four modules specifically designed to ensure that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to continue onto your psychology degree. Topics include cognitive psychology, social psychology, biological psychology, human development and research methods. In addition, there is an applied module with topics including: Psychology and Crime and Psychology and the Environment. To complement your studies in Psychology, you will also enhance your IT and study skills throughout the academic year. A variety of teaching and learning methods are employed to deliver the course and these are tailored to meet your needs. A wide variety of assessment tools are used: formal essays, class tests, coursework, presentations and examinations. This gives you the opportunity to develop your assessment skills throughout the year and allows you to demonstrate your strengths in different types of assessment. After successful completion of the Foundation Year, you will finish your studies at the Stoke campus of Staffordshire University after transferring onto one of our three year full-time Psychology awards.
