English and Sociology

An exploration of literature, thought and language, and the varieties of ways they help us to understand the world. We bring together a wide range of modules in literature and language, to provide you with a stimulating programme in which you can direct the emphasis towards language, or literature (including options in Creative Writing), or achieve a balance of both. With its roots in the rise of modern industrial society, sociology is well placed to explore and understand the personal and public issues of the 21st century whether class, culture or crime. Sociology is a subject that will inform you about all these issues, provide you with the research tools and skills to investigate them and, moreover, evaluate and imagine social policies that could make for a better and more socially just world.
