During the foundation programme, students are encouraged to explore a range of different creative disciplines before specialising in one specific area. This practical programme begins with the opportunity to work on a media-based project as part of a small team. This project helps students to see how different content elements come together to make a final outcome. By working in teams, students also develop interpersonal and project management skills. The course is delivered in a supportive environment, learning a range of academic and study management skills. These skills include independent learning, time management, academic research and critical thinking. Students are also introduced to the business of the creative industries and get a taste of the employment opportunities that are available. Learning is hands-on with an emphasis on employability skills and real situations that students might experience in the workplace. Students will also develop new practical skills to support their chosen degree. These skills include photography, film, editing, audio production, website development, digital design, media and broadcasting. Study skills seminars and tutorials teach students advanced research techniques, how to write creative and compelling text, and how to think critically. Workshops introduce students to media production, photography, script writing, communications, IT skills, investigative journalism and creative writing. During the last part of the year students will work on a final project which is directly related to the honours degree they have chosen. Successful completion of the Journalism, Advertising and Marketing foundation year will provide a pathway to the Public Relations and Communication degree.
