Hoping to pursue a degree in advertising, journalism, marketing or PR? Do you not yet have the necessary qualifications to study at degree level? This innovative foundation year will support you to learn new skills, gain academic confidence and develop your creativity in advance of a full honours degree at Southampton Solent University. During the foundation programme, students are encouraged to explore a range of different creative disciplines before specialising in one specific area. This practical programme begins with the opportunity to work on a media-based project as part of a small team. This project helps students to see how different content elements come together to make a final outcome. By working in teams, students also develop interpersonal and project management skills. The course is delivered in a supportive environment, learning a range of academic and study management skills. These skills include independent learning, time management, academic research and critical thinking. Students are also introduced to the business of the creative industries and get a taste of the employment opportunities that are available. Learning is hands-on with an emphasis on employability skills and real situations that students might experience in the workplace. Students will also develop new practical skills to support their chosen degree. These skills include photography, film, editing, audio production, website development, digital design, media and broadcasting. Study skills seminars and tutorials teach students advanced research techniques, how to write creative and compelling text, and how to think critically. Workshops introduce students to media production, photography, script writing, communications, IT skills, investigative journalism and creative writing. During the last part of the year students will work on a final project which is directly related to the honours degree they have chosen. Successful completion of the Journalism, Advertising and Marketing foundation year will provide a pathway to the Marketing Degree. Designed in partnership with industry employers – and with a strong focus on employability and workplace skills – this three-year degree will equip you with both an understanding of marketing theory and a range of sought-after practical skills. Southampton Solent University’s marketing programme is one of the only programmes in the South to offer students access to a high level of professional qualification in addition to a traditional degree. Additional qualifications include Chartered Institute of Marketing, CAM Foundation, PRINCE2 and Google Analytics awards. These professional qualifications are valued by many employers, giving students an advantage when it comes time to look for graduate employment. The course teams established industry links have provided students with a range of exciting opportunities including guest lectures, live briefs and industry assessments. Businesses that have previously been involved with the course include Mercedes Benz, Ahmed Tea and Dorset Goodness. Students may also take part in national marketing and business competitions. Past students have made entries to both the University Business Challenge and the Pearson RED Challenge.
