This bespoke industry focussed course is specifically designed for the health and fitness industry. From exercise instruction and coaching, fitness technology and operations management to strategic marketing, this course will prepare you for one of the fastest growing industry sectors in the world. Gaining real-world experience is key to the course. To complement and build upon the knowledge gained while studying for their degree, students are required to undertake a four-week work experience placement, designed to expose them to a real life working environment, whether it be with a large fitness operator, a small independent club, local authority, budget gym operator or other organisation. The course provides students with the opportunity to gain entry to the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at the start of their degree - essential for any qualified fitness professional. REPS-accredited industry recognised awards are also embedded within the course. Students also have the opportunity to be a part of the Solent PT initiative, working for an extended period with external clients, made up of Solent university staff. Involvement in the initiative begins in the second year and progresses through to the final year of study. At this stage, students are expected to produce their own business and marketing plan to target and recruit clients with goals that match their specific areas of training expertise and interests. To support the academic units delivered within the degree, students will have the opportunity to hear from a range of guest speakers from the health and fitness industry, some of whom are graduates from Solent’s health and exercise sciences programme. Students are taught by a wide range of specialists, most of whom have extensive health and fitness industry and/or personal training experience. The teaching team also have experience working with awarding bodies, sector skills councils, training providers and REPs, as well as some who are active researchers and published authors in a range of fitness topics. This course delivers the focused skills and knowledge you need for a variety of careers within the dynamic fitness industry, whether working for yourself or managing a team. Previous students on Solent’s health and exercise science programmes have gone on to roles at Nuffield Health, Brightside Personal Training, The Gym, Virgin Active and David Lloyd. This course will suit those who wish to work in this growing industry, in a range of personal training, fitness, exercise or management roles.
