Students study the fundamentals of sport health and exercise therapy through a variety of themes, including leadership, fitness foundations, the sport industry, sport and exercise science contemporary sports issues, and volunteering. In addition to the core academic units, students also have the opportunity to gain professional fitness qualifications (REPS) and coaching qualifications (NGB) alongside their studies. All of the University’s sports courses place a strong emphasis on employability, and students on the sport health and exercise science foundation year have the opportunity to build practical skills and gain valuable real world experience working with our degree students by volunteering on local community projects. Successful completion of the sport health and exercise science foundation year will provide a pathway on to one of Solent University’s highly-regarded health and exercise or sport science degree programmes. Successful completion of the Sport, Health and Exercise Science Foundation Year will provide a pathway to the Fitness and Personal Training degree. Southampton Solent’s fitness and personal training degree will help provide you with the necessary skills and knowledge needed to make an impact in this growing industry. This practical, career-focused degree has given previous students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience to complement their studies. Students work with real-life clients, including exercise referral patients, disabled users, and older adults. This experience aims to give students a rounded knowledge of client goals, as well as developing their professional skills ready to embark on their chosen career. Students are also able to apply their knowledge gained in the University’s industry-standard fitness labs which include a range of modern, high-tech fitness training and testing equipment. Students also have access to specialised physiology and psychology labs. Another important element of the course is our accreditation from the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs), SkillsActive Group and ukactive. These accreditations show potential employers that the course is dedicated to promoting excellence in fitness promotion.
