Fashion Journalism with Foundation Year in Journalism, Advertising and Marketing

Hoping to pursue a degree in advertising, journalism, marketing or PR? Do you not yet have the necessary qualifications to study at degree level? This innovative foundation year will support you to learn new skills, gain academic confidence and develop your creativity in advance of a full honours degree at Southampton Solent University. During the foundation programme, students are encouraged to explore a range of different creative disciplines before specialising in one specific area. This practical programme begins with the opportunity to work on a media-based project as part of a small team. This project helps students to see how different content elements come together to make a final outcome. By working in teams, students also develop interpersonal and project management skills. The course is delivered in a supportive environment, learning a range of academic and study management skills. These skills include independent learning, time management, academic research and critical thinking. Students are also introduced to the business of the creative industries and get a taste of the employment opportunities that are available. Learning is hands-on with an emphasis on employability skills and real situations that students might experience in the workplace. Students will also develop new practical skills to support their chosen degree. These skills include photography, film, editing, audio production, website development, digital design, media and broadcasting. Study skills seminars and tutorials teach students advanced research techniques, how to write creative and compelling text, and how to think critically. Workshops introduce students to media production, photography, script writing, communications, IT skills, investigative journalism and creative writing. During the last part of the year students will work on a final project which is directly related to the honours degree they have chosen. Successful completion of the Journalism, Advertising and Marketing foundation year will provide a pathway to the Fashion Journalism degree. Throughout the course, students will learn a diverse range of journalism and broadcast skills. Students are guided through this curriculum by an in-house team of experienced fashion and journalism professionals, as well as a selection of industry guest speakers. Previous speakers have included fashion author, Agnes Rocamora; Sunday Times fashion commentator, Colin McDowell; fashion critic, Monica Titton; and blogger / beauty writer, Jane Cunningham (British Beauty Blog). Solent Creatives, our in-house creative marketing agency, can also be found on campus. This enterprise provides Solent students with the opportunity to work with businesses on real-life projects and pitch for paid creative work. This gives students the chance to gain valuable work experience, build a professional portfolio and network in the industry. Past years have seen students of fashion journalism go on a number of trips, travelling to iconic fashion capitals including Paris and New York to visits publication houses, exhibitions, fashion archives and press events.
