English and Creative Writing with Journalism, Advertising and Marketing Foundation - Solent University. Southampton

Hoping to pursue a degree in advertising, journalism, marketing or PR? Do you not yet have the necessary qualifications to study at degree level? This innovative foundation year will support you to learn new skills, gain academic confidence and develop your creativity in advance of a full honours degree at Southampton Solent University. During the foundation programme, students are encouraged to explore a range of different creative disciplines before specialising in one specific area. This practical programme begins with the opportunity to work on a media-based project as part of a small team. This project helps students to see how different content elements come together to make a final outcome. By working in teams, students also develop interpersonal and project management skills. The course is delivered in a supportive environment, learning a range of academic and study management skills. These skills include independent learning, time management, academic research and critical thinking. Students are also introduced to the business of the creative industries and get a taste of the employment opportunities that are available. Learning is hands-on with an emphasis on employability skills and real situations that students might experience in the workplace. Students will also develop new practical skills to support their chosen degree. These skills include photography, film, editing, audio production, website development, digital design, media and broadcasting. Study skills seminars and tutorials teach students advanced research techniques, how to write creative and compelling text, and how to think critically. Workshops introduce students to media production, photography, script writing, communications, IT skills, investigative journalism and creative writing. During the last part of the year students will work on a final project which is directly related to the honours degree they have chosen. Successful completion of the Journalism, Advertising and Marketing foundation will provide a pathway to the English and Creative Writing degree. Southampton Solent University’s English and creative writing degree will allow you to develop your own personal writing style while learning about the business of creative writing. Solent’s English and creative writing degree programme provides students with an understanding of how various forms of creative and professional writing are planned, developed and creatively executed, as well as how creative writing theory can be married to creative writing practice. Core areas of study include literary theory, poetry, writing and play texts. Students also have the opportunity to study a range of optional units, allowing them to delve deeper into specific subjects and focus on areas of writing that are of the most interest. Students are encouraged to critically analyse, evaluate and interpret the means by which literature, language and creative writing can influence and reflect cultural change. As part of this, students will explore literary texts and learn the craft of writing for a range of industries, developing creative talent and laying the foundations to prepare for a career in creative writing. Students will also have the opportunity to develop transferable skills including research, analytical, communication and team working skills. The course has a strong focus on employability and students are supported in finding their own work placements. Students on the English and creative writing course may also have the opportunity to pitch for work experience through our in-house agency, Solent Creatives, providing opportunities to work on live briefs from real-world clients.
