Through this programme you will have the opportunity to specialise in statistics, building statistical theory and methodology on mathematical foundations, especially probability theory. Probabilistic modelling has applications in genetics, quantum physics and risk analysis, and is increasingly used in the financial sector. You can study applications of probability and statistics, notably design of experiments, financial time series and actuarial mathematics. This programme is accredited by the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) and final-year students gain free membership of the RSS. Graduate Statistician status can be obtained by graduates who achieve a first- or second-class degree upon the presentation of a degree transcript to the RSS, showing that their degree has a statistics content of at least 50%. Guidance is given by the School as to which modules meet this criteria. At university, you will discover a new world of concepts and ideas. You will encounter new kinds of mathematical objects and investigate their common features and abstract natures. But it is not all abstract: our statistics and finance modules are very much about the real world – you will use mathematical skills to extract information from data and draw conclusions. For example, you might use statistical design of experiments to test how well medicines work.
