German and Russian

Studying modern languages is about more than vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation: you will also immerse yourself in culture, may spend time working or studying abroad and will learn to understand the subtleties of communication. This degree programmes is split equally between German and Russian in order to achieve the same high level of competence in both languages. To achieve the same high level of competence in both languages, you will take core modules in the written and spoken German and Russian languages all the way through to your final year. Students with little or no knowledge of Russian follow a special two-year ab initio track taking them beyond A-level standard. You then progress to the year abroad in Year 3, returning for a final year and finishing in four years. Students who already have an A-level in Russian or an equivalent qualification, go straight into Russian I. Each year you receive a large amount of language tuition designed to bring your competence in understanding and expressing yourself to as high a level as possible. Students take modules in Russian literature, thought and film to enrich their feel for the language. We also encourage you to take modules in History and other disciplines where there is a strong interest in Russia. Students are encouraged to participate in the annual play, performed in Russian.
