The combination of coaching, teaching and sport development remains a necessity when the current and future plans of the Government and Sport England are considered. There is a clear need for individuals to appreciate and utilise information from each of these academic fields in their provision of sport and physical education, in whatever form. Therefore, the need for future sport development officers, sport coaches and PE teachers to have an understanding of all the pertinent fields is crucial. A key aspiration is to prepare graduates to drive coaching, physical education and sport development forward, both as a profession, and academic discipline. The Sport, Coaching & Physical Education degree is proposed as a single honours route leading to an award of a B.A. (Hons) degree. A significant element of the Sport, Coaching & Physical Education programme is its strong links to teaching and coaching practice that have been established with local and national bodies such as SkillsActive, Sports Coach UK, Youth Sports Trust and links with Professional Sports organisations together with numerous primary and secondary schools in the area. The overarching aim of the programme is to develop in students a broad base of knowledge, skills and critical understanding in the context of sports coaching, teaching physical education and sports development, all underpinned by relevant academic rigour and applied practice.
