Primary Education (with Physical Education) (with QTS) - Plymouth Marjon University

This course gives students the opportunity to experience a range of primary subjects as well as gaining the skills and expertise to lead and develop Physical Education in primary schools. At the end of the course you will be qualified to teach across both Key Stages 1 and 2 and have particular expertise and experience in teaching Physical Education. Integrated Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) means you can launch your teaching career immediately after finishing your studies. Plymouth Marjon University is widely praised by Ofsted for providing a comprehensive and enriching teacher training programme. Building on long established partnerships with a diverse range of schools all students have ample opportunities to learn with experienced primary practitioners. From the start of the course students work in a range of schools gradually building up confidence and expertise. Many of the modules will be shared with the Primary Education programme along with focused teaching from Physical Education specialists, using the university’s world-class sporting facilities. The University works in close partnership with a large number of different types of schools and school-based activities and working with children in different contexts will form a key part of this exciting programme. This comprehensive course is carefully structured to provide you with the skills and subject knowledge to teach the National Curriculum core subjects along with Physical Education. Specialism modules from year 1 and a defined focus on teaching these subjects on all placements will enable you to build confidence and expertise from the start. There will also be a strong emphasis on supporting extra-curricular activities in schools to promote health, physical activity and well-being for all pupils. Your final-year research dissertation will also centre on an aspect of Physical Education of your choice. Support with applications and interviews prepare you for your first post and rates of employment are very high for Marjon graduates, who also progress quickly in their careers, earning more than teaching graduates from other universities in the south west and Wales after five years (LEO data DfE 2017). This comprehensive primary programme, which supports individual development, ensures you are well-equipped to teach across the primary age range, but also offer additional skills in Physical Education, thereby enhancing your employability and opportunities for promotion. The University has a unique pedigree and heritage in training teachers, with the founders of the original Colleges of St Mark & St John inventing the notion of a serious preparation for teachers over 175 years ago. Since then, the University has had an unrivalled impact and reputation for populating this country, and indeed the world, with high quality, energetic new teachers. The high quality is still very much in evidence, with ratings consistently above the sector on the National Student Survey (NSS). As this is a relatively new programme there is no NSS data yet, but in 2018, overall satisfaction levels for the primary programme were 95% and the university is ranked 12th in the country. The Times Good University Guide (2019) ranks Marjon first in England for teaching quality and 10th for student experience.
