Human Communication and Linguistics

Language is everywhere. It’s fundamental to almost everything we do and who we are. We use language not only to inform, but also to influence people, to negotiate, to entertain and for fun. If you are interested in how people communicate and what that tells us about how they tick, then this could be the perfect degree for you. Linguistics bridges fields as diverse as psychology, sociology, philosophy, education, history and wherever people are the subject of study. This course develops your sensitivity to language and communication and gives you the skills to describe what you observe. During the course, we’ll ask questions about what language is, how it works, where it comes from, how we learn it and how we teach it. Your highly developed communication skills will help you to excel in careers where strong communication is crucial. You might enter teaching, counselling or language therapy, following a post graduate vocational qualification. Linguistics sets you up well for teaching English all over the world and many students follow this path. Areas such as management and publishing need both good language and good communication skills, while many other graduates work freelance or are employed as proof readers, translators or technical writers. There is also a growing need for work on ‘plain English’ documentation of complex instructions, advertising and anywhere else that language is a crucial part of business.
