Textile Design

If you are interested in exploring and developing your skills in the creative areas of printing, embroidery weaving and knitting then this award-winning course is for you. You’ll be involved in art and design now, either through your studies or through experience, and have a developed and comprehensive creative portfolio. Our academic team will help teach you hand-crafting and digital techniques in our extensive facilities where you’ll explore different aspects of textile design before specialising in a particular area. Fashion and Textiles at NTU is ranked 5th in the UK in the university subject tables ( 2017 Guardian League Table). This course is the only course in the UK which is accredited by the Chartered Society of Designers and 96% of students are satisfied with this course. You will work in our extensive Textile Design facilities with support from our expert technical staff who will encourage you to partake in competitions and live projects through collaborations with visiting professionals, brands and organisations such as Next and Fat Face. You’ll get to use our world-class facilities range from traditional to cutting edge: from hand looms and screen printing, through to industry-standard textile technology and full modernised studios and workshops This course is assessed 100% by coursework, this might take form as a portfolio, research or sketchbooks. The course is delivered in variety of ways including: briefings, lectures, seminars, presentations and study visits. You’ll also have the exciting and unique opportunity to transfer to our BA (Hons) Fashion Knitwear Design and Knitted Textiles or BA (Hons) Fashion Accessory Design in Year Two. You’ll also be able to collaborate with students from other courses including Fashion Design, Decorative Arts and Fashion Knitwear Design and Knitted Textiles which will enhance your team work and organisation skills. You’ll receive support to undertake informal work experience and internships and have the opportunity to apply for an exchange in Year Two to study at another university in Europe through our Erasmus scheme. During your university exchange, you’ll gain an international perspective through overseas visits to fashion and textiles events and by working with global companies. This NTU course will offer you the chance to visit international trade shows such as Première Vision in Paris or apply for a year-long paid graduate internship in New York to work for the ANN INC. brands to gain an international insight into textile design and to builds great links with professionals in the industry. You’ll get to use both theoretical and practical perspectives by exploring fashion and interior design. This course will encourage you to undertake work experience alongside your studies and to work on live projects to gain good time-management skills and even the chance of employment after graduating. Our strong links with industry help keep the course informed of new practices and techniques, as well as supporting wide-ranging informal work experience opportunities. Recent students have gained valuable experience with companies such as Paul Smith, Julien Macdonald and Romo. You’ll also exhibit your work in Year Three at our Degree Shows in Nottingham, and have the opportunity to exhibit at New Designers in London to members of different creative industries and you may get selected to showcase your designs at SPINEXPO in Shanghai, China. 93% of students go into employment or further study within six months of graduating. Many of our recent graduates have pursued roles such as: textile design assistant at Boden, fashion adviser at Mama & Papas, studio assistant at Nina Campbell, print assistant at Paul Smith and merchandiser at Topshop.
