Mandarin Chinese and Global Studies

Joint Honours degrees give you the maximum flexibility to study subject areas that really interest you. You can shape your study according to your strengths, interests and career ambitions. MANDARIN CHINESE can be studied at beginner or GCSE level but if you wish to study the course at post A-level, you'll need an A-level in Mandarin Chinese. You'll develop excellent language skills as well as a broad understanding of Chinese culture and society. This course is ideal for anyone who wishes to understand the history, political and social aspects of China. GLOBAL STUDIES will give you the opportunity to focus on developing an awareness of pressing social, cultural and political crises and will allow you to weave world relevance into your degree. NTU’s Mandarin Chinese course will introduce you to the modern spoken and written language of Chinese. You'll then focus on the historical, political and cultural background of China. This course will help you to gain impressive communication skills such as reading and speaking whilst developing your accuracy and fluency of this modern and widely spoken language. During your third year you will have the option to either work for a year or study in China at one of our partner universities. To help improve your career prospects you'll be able to take a final year module that develops translation and interpretation skills. You'll be taught with the latest cutting edge language learning methodologies and CALL technologies. Global Studies at NTU enables you to engage with the world as a global citizen and gives you a unique opportunity to incorporate world relevance into your degree. You'll focus on developing an understanding of the global dimensions of social, cultural, political and economic issues. This course is ideal for you if you have an interest in current global crises such as; migration, conflict, inequality, food security and the everyday experiences of people living in globalised communities. This joint honours degree will prepare you for a range of national and international careers, by helping you to develop excellent written and oral communication skills within the English and Mandarin Chinese languages. Mandarin Chinese has been designed to ensure that you pick the course up quickly and grasp an understanding of the cultures in which it's spoken as well as study in China to enhance your learning and travel experience. Global Studies will help you to understand the different social and cultural changes the world goes through and allows you to build world relevance within your degree. A global aspect to your degree will enhance your global citizen competencies which will help you to work for a range national and multinational organisations. At the end of your degree you'll be able to recognise global trends and tensions which is an important skill for many careers ranging from business to heritage management. 91% of our global studies joint honours undergraduates are in work or further study within just six months of finishing their degree (DLHE 2015-16). You'll also develop a high level of fluency and accuracy in spoken and written Chinese as well as an understanding of Chinese culture, history and society. You'll gain valuable critical analysis skills, be able to manage your time effectively, be self-motivated, mature, self-reliant and confident. Recent NTU undergraduates have pursued careers within the field of teaching, civil service and the media. This vocational degree has opened many opportunities for undergraduates to undertake a further vocational study in translation and interpreting.
