Newman University has developed an innovative foundation year for their social science degrees. The pre-degree year of this four year course, if passed, leads into the same study programme as the 3 year joint honours degree course in Applied Social Science. This foundation year enables those unable to access the traditional UCAS tariff requirements for a three year degree, an alternative route into beginning and ultimately gaining an honours degree. Societies are changing rapidly and are increasingly having to respond to the challenges of globalisation, new technologies, demographic shifts and the aftereffects of austerity and recession. Drawing on insights from sociology, social policy, politics and criminology, our course offers students the opportunity to acquire a solid grounding in and critical understanding of social science, and how policies and political decisions impact on the lives of people and their communities, locally, nationally and internationally. You can expect to be engaged from the outset in lively and up-to-date debates about the big issues facing contemporary societies, exploring themes such as equality and diversity, inequalities and exclusion, community cohesion, and the ways in which our everyday lives are shaped by ideas, culture and the media.
