Zoology

The Zoology MBiol degree is a flexible, integrated Masters course which allows you to combine a balanced understanding of the key concepts in animal evolution and behaviour, taxonomy and physiology, with a deeper understanding of aspects of the discipline that interest you most. A significant element of the course is the Masters level project that provides the opportunity to pursue and extended piece of original research, independently or in cooperation with an external organisation. Opportunities for field-based study and research are another key feature of the programme: currently we offer opportunities for fieldwork in Portugal, Tanzania and Kenya as well as in the UK. Features and benefits: - Throughout your course you will acquire practical skills in the laboratory and in the field, both in the UK and overseas. - You will explore topics and issues that impact upon our lives and the world around us and there is a range of exciting and rewarding specialisms to choose from. - Learn in high specification teaching and research laboratories which include a specialist microbiology and cell/molecular biology lab, a DNA-sequencing lab, specialist animal behaviour facilities with Ethovision and Observer software, invertebrate behaviour and freshwater biology labs, and controlled environment plant growth chambers. We also have advanced high spec nuclear magnetic resonance, spectrometry and chromatography instrumentation which gives you hands-on experience of advanced analysis techniques. - Opportunities for field-based study is a key feature of the programme. Currently we offer residential field course opportunities based in South Wales (year 1), Portugal (year 2) and Tanzania or South America (year 2/3). Final year project students can also take the opportunity to conduct research in Tanzania and Kenya. - At Manchester Met the choice between MBiol and BSc can be left until the end of Year 2, if you initially apply for the MBiol degree, progression to the MBiol programme is subject to your general performance at the end of year 2. If you are ineligible you will be transferred to the BSc (Hons) Zoology route.
