Secondary Mathematics Education with QTS

This new, three year, full-time degree course is ideally suited for those who wish to study mathematics with a view to teaching this important specialism at secondary level. In addition, it provides a strong foundation in mathematics, mathematics education and education for those interested in working in allied fields, such as publishing, the museum service or community education. Teaching is led by the Faculty of Education's Centre for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education in collaboration with the Faculty of Science and Engineering's School of Computing, Mathematics and Digital Technology. The Faculty of Education has been providing initial teacher training for over 100 years and both faculties have a national and international reputation reputation in their respective fields. One third of the course comprises mathematics units where students work alongside mathematics undergraduates. This allows flexibility for students who decide they want to major in mathematics after their first year and ensures all graduates have a strong mathematical background. School experience draws on Manchester Met's highly successful University Schools placement model where tutors work alongside teachers in school with groups of students. Taught sessions for this course will be based at the Manchester campus. For those who already hold an honours degree or equivalent the Faculty also offers one year, full-time PGCEs in Mathematics and in Physics with Mathematics, leading to Qualified Teacher Status to teach at secondary level. **In February 2017, the Secretary of State for Education made a commitment to strengthen Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) by September 2019. As part of this work, the Department for Education has launched a consultation to explore a number of options and proposals to strengthen QTS and support teacher career progression which includes, amongst other points, a review of the point at which QTS is awarded. Further information on the content of the consultation can be found here: https://consult.education.gov.uk/teaching-profession-unit/strengthening-qts-and-improving-career-progression/** Features and Benefits - Integrated and flexible approach to studying mathematics alongside obtaining QTS - Course delivered by teaching staff from two faculties, including the Centre for STEM Education, who have specialist knowledge of mathematics and teacher education - Opportunity to apply to study in Europe for five months in year 2 - Access to NQT support, alumni network and ongoing career links after graduation
