Primary Education with QTS

The Faculty of Education has a national reputation for training teachers which has been established over 100 years. Students trained by Manchester Met have flexibility, adaptability and resilience together with knowledge and understanding of the primary context. You will gain experience at every key stage, ensuring you are prepared to teach any year group and that you understand how early years fits with key stages 1 and 2. This element, together with the emphasis placed on practice placements, enhances future employability. You will be assessed against the teacher standards in place. Training is structured progressively, developing student teachers who are critical and reflective thinkers and who use research to inform their practice. The requirement for independent study builds up over the three years. We aim to develop confident teachers who will be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to inclusion. The degree contains elements of choice leading to the study of two specialist areas in which you select the focus. We anticipate that there may be the opportunity to engage in enrichment visits to other countries during the second year of the programme. All students also have the voluntary, self-funded, option to study for the Catholic Teaching Certificate. In February 2017, the Secretary of State for Education made a commitment to strengthen Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) by September 2019. As part of this work, the Department for Education has launched a consultation to explore a number of options and proposals to strengthen QTS and support teacher career progression which includes, amongst other points, a review of the point at which QTS is awarded. Further information on the content of the consultation can be found here: https://consult.education.gov.uk/teaching-profession-unit/strengthening-qts-and-improving-career-progression/ Successful candidates will demonstrate a good understanding of teaching and learning within a primary school setting. Candidates may wish to evidence their understanding by drawing on related examples or experiences, such as time spent in schools or other learning settings. Features and Benefits - Primary teaching staff with expertise across the curriculum - Specialist teaching facilities, including primary science and resource bases - There may be opportunities for enrichment visits to look at education and schools in other countries during the second year of the programme - Access to NQT support, alumni network and ongoing career links and further programmes of study after graduation rs
