This course allows you to combine studies in marketing with that of the wider business environment and offers a focus on issues relating to Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs). Business enterprise covers the general principles underlying all business ventures (marketing, strategy, business environment and business planning), focusing on small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and the entrepreneur. This course will appeal if you are interested in setting up your own business or working in the SME sector. Major and named route (where you focus solely on your major subject in your final year) students also undertake a business enterprise project in the final year, where you work in teams to set up a live business and compete in a Young Enterprise competition. Marketing is all about presenting people, products and ideas to different audiences. The results can be spectacular, creating global brands that become household names and sparking new trends that revolutionise what we do and how we do it. Job roles in the sector can be very varied and combine skills in project management, marketing operations and campaign planning with creative skills such as devising memorable advertising slogans and writing effective media. Our Marketing degrees are delivered at our award-winning Business School and have been developed in close co-operation with practitioners from the industry, who are also actively involved as expert guest lecturers, mentors and placement employers. This is a Combined Honours degree programme, providing the flexibility for you to study two subjects at degree level. Your choice of combination can be shaped to suit your interests, strengths and career ambitions. Studying a Combined Honours programme, the combinations you may choose to study will vary each year, so you may wish to study more units of one subject rather than the other. In Year 1 you will study equal amounts of your two subjects. In Year 2 the balance may vary from equal amounts of each subject to a major/minor combination where you focus more on one of your subjects. In Year 3, you may continue to study both subjects on an equal or major/minor basis. Whatever your chosen subject combination, you will be able to demonstrate to future employers your flexibility and breadth of experience and skills. This Combined Honours degree is a four-year route where you can choose to take a placement year in industry. A placement year can be an excellent opportunity to acquire high quality work experience and structured on–the-job training whilst earning a salary. There are also opportunities for you to undertake a placement based project where you research a business issue for your employer. This project can count towards one of your final year units and reduces your workload in your final year. The placement must be a minimum of 36 weeks but it will usually last for 12 months and takes place after your second year of study. We have an award-winning placement team, who advertise vacancies and can help you find a placement. The team has over 25 years’ experience of matching students to employers. They advertise over 1,000 vacancies each year, organise an annual placement fair where you can meet employers who are actively recruiting placement students, deliver CV workshops, provide one-to-one advice, and will conduct a mock interview with you so you can practice your interview technique.
