Business Enterprise/Human Resource Management

This is a Combined Honours degree programme, providing the flexibility for you to study two subjects at degree level. Your choice of combination can be shaped to suit your interests, strengths and career ambitions. This course allows you to study human resource and people management and combine this with an understanding of the wider business environment, with a focus on issues relating to Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs). The Business Enterprise elements of this degree covers the general principles underlying all business ventures (marketing, strategy, business environment and business planning), focusing on small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and the entrepreneur. This course will appeal if you are interested in setting up your own business or working in the SME sector. There is a range of option units to choose from in the final year. Major and named route (where you focus solely on your major subject in your final year) students also undertake a business enterprise project in the final year, where you work in teams to set up a live business and compete in a Young Enterprise competition. Human Resource Management elements of this degree will cover how to manage people in business organisations. People are central to any business, which is why it is so important that they are managed carefully and responsibly. Human Resource Management (HRM) is a vital function of a business because motivated, happy employees result in a productive workforce, which in turn means businesses can grow and develop with their people. From debates around fair and transparent rewards for top management, the implementation of flexible working practices like zero hours contracts, to the recruitment and retention of talent within an organisation, there are many challenges for the HR Manager. Studying Human Resource Management will equip you with the necessary skills to effectively manage and develop people within organisations. Successful HR professionals have excellent communications skills. They are able to show empathy and use their problem solving skills to analyse situations and give honest, fair advice in order to overcome employment issues. Studying a Combined Honours programme, the combinations you may choose to study will vary each year, so you may wish to study more units of one subject rather than the other. In Year 1 you will study equal amounts of your two subjects. In Year 2 the balance may vary from equal amounts of each subject to a major/minor combination where you focus more on one of your subjects. In Year 3, you may continue to study both subjects on an equal or major/minor basis. Whatever your chosen subject combination, you will be able to demonstrate to future employers your flexibility and breadth of experience and skills. This Combined Honours degree also offer four-year routes where you can choose to take either a placement year in industry or a year of studying abroad. We are a double-accredited business school, having gained the prestigious AACSB accreditation to provide excellence in global management education. This places us among the top 5% of business schools worldwide to have secured this accreditation and means your degree is internationally recognised.
