The Department of Materials at Loughborough is in the UK top 10 in all the major newspaper league tables. They are ranked within the Top 5 in the UK for student satisfaction in the Times Good University Guide 2016. Materials Engineering is a challenging, interdisciplinary subject offering considerable variety and exceptional opportunity for future careers. This course is a comprehensive programme of modules that delivers both theory and essential industrial experience employers seek from graduates. Through a careful balance of lectures, practical sessions and case studies, students develop a thorough understanding of the properties and capabilities of metals, polymers, ceramics and composites. These can be applied to a wide range of industrial contexts. Students also learn how to develop and process new materials, which they can use within workable components and effectively drive new developments in products and technology. We strongly believe in the benefits professional institutes and industry bodies can bring, and finance membership for all students of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3). The course has also been designed to meet the current requirements of industry and to allow progression towards Chartered Engineer status.
