Chemistry - Loughborough University

The principles and application of modern chemistry underpin many important UK industries. Our Chemistry MChem provides in-depth study of physical, inorganic and organic chemistry, while equipping you with essential practical and research skills. Often referred to as the 'central science' because of its role in connecting the physical sciences, Chemistry is a wonderfully rich and fascinating subject that opens up infinite career and research possibilities for its students. Many of the global challenges of today and tomorrow will be solved by chemists. Our MChem in Chemistry will give you the thorough grounding in the fundamentals of chemistry, while also developing the transferable skills sought after (and highly prized) by employers, including a logical and imaginative approach to problem-solving and effective communication skills. In the final year of the MChem course you will undertake a substantial individual research project (supervised by a member of academic staff) in a subject area of your choosing. For this reason, the MChem is the qualification of choice for students considering careers in industrial research or a PhD. In Years 1 and 2 the core areas of inorganic, organic and physical chemistry form the backbone of the course, with additional modules in spectroscopy, analytical chemistry, energy, and mathematics. Laboratory classes, workshops and seminars support these lectures. After Year 2, the development of core chemistry continues along with optional topics which include drug synthesis and action, advanced analytical research methodologies, and advanced physical and inorganic chemistry. In Year 4 you will study advanced research techniques that are complemented with further optional modules in chemistry, and an extended research project (60 credits) where you will have the opportunity to work in the research laboratories alongside postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers.
