Art & Design History and Creative Writing

**Please note that Combined Honours degrees at Liverpool Hope University are split 50/50. This means both subjects will be studied equally.** **Art & Design History** Art and Design History is an exciting discipline that encompasses the study of visual artefacts, museum and gallery practices and the production and circulation of meaning around art and design. The Art and Design History combined honours degree **provides a systematic understanding of art and design practices** and theories with a strong emphasis on critical thinking. Exclusive partnerships with National Museums Liverpool and Tate Liverpool, plus close collaborations with FACT and Bluecoat Gallery and Display Centre, offer you **privileged access to important collections in Liverpool** and experts working in the field. There is also the possibility to participate in overseas study tours – in recent years the department has visited Amsterdam, Barcelona, Bilbao, Milan, Paris, Florence, Venice, Berlin and New York. Another distinctive element of this degree is the curriculum, which covers key developments in art and design history. Furthermore, students in the second and third year will take **‘Professional Practice for Art and Design History’.** These courses look at theoretical approaches to museology, as well as more practical considerations such as conservation, exhibition planning and design, curatorial practices and educational activities. **Creative Writing** Creative Writing at Liverpool Hope will give you the chance to **experience the joys of crafting the written and spoken word**. Driven by creativity and employability, this degree focuses on literary and professional writing and will equip you with the ability to produce engaging, innovative and saleable texts. By studying Creative Writing, you will be empowered with an enhanced command of your craft, increased confidence in expressing your thoughts and emotions, an understanding of the values that inform your writing practice, and the technical skillset to deliver your work to various audiences. **Your writing will be enhanced by studying under celebrated writers and academics**, as well as developing a range of workplace skills to prepare for fulfilling careers. The degree will often challenge you and ask you to reach beyond your own experience and interests into those of contemporary and historical communities. Using these as creative stimuli, you will be required to reflect upon social contexts, power, and how truth and justice can be communicated or miscommunicated through creative writing. By the end of the degree, you should have a **wide appreciation of forms, genres and applications**. Included in the degree are field trips to Wales, and Liverpool museums and galleries, which provide material for writing exercises as well as widening your student experience.
