Psychology and Criminology

Why do people offend? Does punishment ever work? Can we reduce crime? Psychology and Criminology are two major social sciences which seek to explain human behaviour. When you study them together, you’ll develop an understanding of the psychological, sociological and criminological explanations of crime and deviance. You’ll apply this understanding to individual offenders and their treatment, as well as exploring psychology’s potential role in reducing crime. You’ll learn in a supportive and lively environment which focuses on teamwork and collaboration. As well as teaching you the core elements of psychology and criminology, we’ll support you in developing your research skills from the start of your degree. In your final year, you’ll work with your own supervisor to design and carry out your own research project. You can choose to specialise in an applied area of your interest in your final year, such as counselling psychology, forensic psychology, or prisons and punishment. Throughout your degree, you’ll put theory into practice through the two professional work placements included in your degree, as well as assessments which help you to develop valuable real-world skills. You’ll have an excellent grounding in both disciplines which will make you ready to become a competent and ethical practitioner within the Criminal Justice System. **Graduate opportunities** You’ll be well-prepared for a range of graduate roles in organisations such as the Ministry of Justice, the National Offender Management Service, the police, the NHS, private practice, voluntary organisations, charities, research and education. You could also complete postgraduate study that will prepare you to work in a specialist area of applied psychology. **Placement opportunities** We are one of only a few UK universities to build professional work placements into every degree. You’ll complete two professional work placements, which will give you the chance to graduate with up to three months’ professional work experience without having to take a sandwich year out. You’ll complete a five-week placement in your first year and a six-week placement in your second year, and we’ll work with you to find placements relevant to your career aspirations. Typical placement organisations include HM Prison Service, charities, secure units, drugs services and crime reduction initiatives.
