What can the history of the British Empire teach us about Brexit? How does the media impact on elections? How has Parliament changed over time? Explore contemporary political phenomena in relation to historical events with our History and Politics degree. Learning through a blend of theory and practice, you’ll study core strands in contemporary world history, global politics, history and media, and political theory. You’ll examine political processes and the philosophical justifications of political systems, while looking at the challenges modern politics faces. You’ll gain an awareness of continuity and change over extended time-spans and across different societies and cultures. We’ll teach you how to recognise different approaches to history and politics and question the scope of scholarship, as well as showing you how the past and present have been presented and re-presented. Throughout the course, we’ll give you the opportunity to develop a wide range of professionally relevant skills that will prepare you for employment. You’ll learn how to manage projects, collect and collate information, and evaluate and interpret evidence. We’ll also teach you how to select, organise and produce large quantities of data, while giving you plenty of opportunities to work in teams. You’ll put your learning into practice with the professional work placements included in your degree, developing your specialist expertise and understanding of professional policy and practice. By the time you graduate, you’ll have had the chance to develop a range of skills that will enable you to make informed choices about ethical behaviour, social responsibility, environmental issues, access and cultural diversity, in relation to history and politics. **Graduate opportunities** Our graduates have careers in a wide range of professions and fields, including teaching (after further study), journalism, local government, the civil service, legal services, social research, marketing, human resources and PR. Our graduates are particularly well-prepared for careers in management and business. **Placement opportunities** We are one of only a few UK universities to build professional work placements into every degree. You’ll complete two professional work placements, which will give you the chance to graduate with up to three months’ professional work experience without having to take a sandwich year out. Our students typically complete placements in primary and secondary schools, law firms, MPs’ offices, media organisations, museums and archives and human resources, as well as working as researchers in universities.
