English Literature

Do you want to learn how you can use literature to explore the world and your potential role in it? English Literature will give you the opportunity to read and enjoy a wide range of literary texts, including Shakespearean drama, children’s literature, and postmodern fiction. You’ll learn how to read and analyse poetry and short stories, as well as gaining an understanding of how to compare past and contemporary texts in the same genres. You’ll have the opportunity to explore classic mythology and literature in the Bible, and you’ll look at contemporary styles and issues such as constructions of gender and magical realism in world fiction. We’ll teach you the skills and techniques of professional scholarship and literary research, developing your confidence in sharing your knowledge and communicating your ideas. We’ll encourage you to be creative in responding to texts, giving you the chance to communicate your own particular passion for literature. You’ll also have opportunities to create your own literature, with optional creative writing workshops in each year of your degree. Professional experience is crucial, so you’ll complete two professional work placements and we’ll encourage you to think about how you can use your skills, knowledge and interests in a future career. **Graduate opportunities** You’ll be well-prepared for a wide range of graduate careers in teaching and education, the media, the public sector, journalism, marketing, PR, and communications. **Placement opportunities** We are one of only a few UK universities to build professional work placements into every degree. You’ll complete two professional work placements, which will give you the chance to graduate with up to three months’ professional work experience without having to take a sandwich year out. Your professional work placements will give you the chance to experience the careers that an English Literature degree can lead to. Our students have completed their placements at a wide range of organisations – from film production companies and recording studios, to local newspapers and MP offices. If you’re interested in teaching, you could also experience working in a primary or secondary school.
