This course will give students the skills to become sophisticated music producers, with performance experience in jazz ensembles. Combining small group tuition (5 students) and one-to-one final year tuition/mentoring, small-ensemble work and seminars, this course will underpin students’ composition skills with the technical know-how necessary to compete in a fast-moving music industry. Students will enhance their understanding of production practices within a studio environment alongside issues of style and repertoire from a jazz ensemble perspective. In addition, our students can also dip into cross-pathway options throughout the course, including areas such as musical direction, orchestration, electroacoustic composition, extended improvisation and songwriting. Internationally renowned, the Leeds Jazz scene has consistently produced some of the UK’s most creative musicians for over fifty years, and the Jazz course at Leeds College of Music is right at the very heart of this movement. Our students see world class music every night of the week at the many clubs we collaborate with, including our own B Side, Undercurrent and Fusebox sessions, where staff, students and guests play into the night. Most of our students are here as performers, and our teachers and resources provide a first rate setting for students who are serious about learning to improvise. Workshops and gigs take place every Friday, when we invite touring artists to share their expertise. Staff also perform and compose at the highest level, and are here to share their knowledge and experience, as well as provide professional opportunities for students.
