Leeds College of Music is at the centre of the thriving Leeds music scene in a city tightly packed with music venues, from small intimate bars to major touring venues. The Popular Music programme thrives off this scene and any night of the week LCoM students can be found all over the city performing and earning their place in its energised, diverse, and pioneering music culture. The Popular Music faculty is first class, highly experienced, and reflect the diverse background and tastes of our Popular Music students. They work together to help you find your creative voice and develop as a unique, driven, and professional popular musician. In addition to your classes, we invite world class industry experts to share their knowledge, expertise, and experience with you in weekly masterclasses, workshops, and performances. This course follows the same specifications as our three year BA (Hons) Music (Popular) except that the extra Foundation Year allows for students who need an extra year of study to achieve the standard of our entry requirements for the 3-year BA. The Foundation Year modules include one to one tuition on your principal instrument/voice, as well as skills development in ensemble work, music theory and aural skills. Contextual Studies focuses on the repertoire of your chosen pathway, as well as cross pathway musicology and practical and collaborative sessions focusing on creative skills. The Musicianship Skills modules allows all students who have completed their Grade 5 theory prior to the start of the course to choose an elective module to supplement the core curriculum. The list of options includes subjects like music technology, keyboard skills, pathway specific composition and creative performance techniques. On completion of the Foundation Year you will continue to Year 1 of the BA (Hons) Music (Popular). From level 4 your learning is shaped through one-to-one tuition, band work, lectures and seminars. This very practical course supports your development into a highly skilled specialist performer. Focus is placed on developing technical proficiency and artistry, as well as enhancing compositional, musicological and critical listening skills. Additional business focused modules are embedded throughout the programme, enabling students to forge a successful and sustainable career in a highly competitive field.
