From day one on this intensive course, we write, plan and make films in the studio and on location; producing work in a community of filmmakers and friends, supported through discussion, practice and expert staff and facilities. Students on the BA (Hons) Filmmaking course are immersed in the hands-on experience of making films and gain a deep understanding of a wide range of production roles, methods and techniques, and the artistic and technical process of film production. Together, we work in production teams to produce high-end fiction, documentary, music and advertising; providing a professional outlook and the experience, knowledge, ability and support to commercialise your skills for work in the film and screen industries. We are a close community of makers, artists, practitioners and friends. The focus of the course is on the craft of production; supported by watching, investigating, analysing, critiquing and thinking about film in order to discover our own identities as filmmakers. Working in small groups with other passionate filmmakers you explore the key aspects of filmmaking through the process of getting involved in developing and producing films. We provide the structure and the support for you to be challenged and experimental in your practice, helping you to gain the artistic, practical, cognitive and specialised tools to become a filmmaker. Our students take an active and creative role in all stages of development and production, learning the skills of directing, producing, cinematography, sound, editing, production design and scriptwriting. Our students enjoy creative freedom, and have the opportunity to pitch and initiate projects across a wide range of productions, from fiction to documentary, advertising to music, with support and guidance for professional and business skills, self promotion, finance and distribution, providing the knowledge to commercialise practical experiences and skills, and to successfully navigate the film and screen industry. Learning and teaching is supported through filmmaking practice: in the studio, on location, in screenwriting seminars and film screenings, in production meetings and class discussions, industry talks and study trips. In addition, you may have the opportunity to visit international film festivals (such as Berlin and Toronto) and closer to home events (such as Edinburgh, Bristol, Sheffield Documentary Festival and the Leeds International Film Festival). Our students bring with them an enthusiasm for film and screen, and a commitment to filmmaking. This is a challenging course where your hard work will be rewarded with the knowledge and experience of a filmmaker. * Course subject to approval
