The King’s French with History BA is a four-year programme designed to develop your critical analysis and independent thought process on historical topics, as well as focusing on the advanced study of French language and culture. King’s has a world-class reputation for the study of History, and you will choose from a challenging and diverse range of History modules to study alongside Francophone language and literature, French history, film, politics and philosophy. The interdisciplinary nature of this course will give you a broad and critical understanding of both history and in French language and culture, as well as an advanced capacity for critical thinking and analysis. Teaching style We use lectures, seminars and small group tutorials to deliver most of the modules on the programme. French language modules concentrate on high standards in written, oral and translation skills, and will involve demanding tutorials with experienced native French lecturers. History modules will be taught by faculty lecturers and will reflect their expertise. Assessment We will assess your progress and attainment on all modules you take in both the French and History sections of the programme through a range of techniques including written exams and coursework. The final degree classification you will receive is dependent on which modules you choose to study in the last two years of the programme. Location Located in the heart of London at the Strand Campus, the modern languages centre is close to excellent resources for students, with specialist libraries including the Institut Français, as well as exceptional galleries, theatres and cinemas. Special notes The single honours four-year French degree, like all other joint and major/minor honours programmes, includes a third year spent studying abroad. If you take joint honours in French and another language your year abroad will usually be split between a French-speaking country and a country speaking your other language. If you combine French with a subject that is not another language your whole year abroad will be spent in a French-speaking country. We have exchanges with many different universities in places as diverse as Paris, Montreal, Geneva and Martinique among others.
