French and German (with year abroad)

Our French with German BA involves you following required language modules throughout the programme, and also selecting from a diverse range of optional modules for both languages. Your optional modules in French cover Francophone literature from the Middle Ages to the present day, as well as further modules in French history, contemporary French institutions, film, politics and philosophy. Your German modules will include literature from all periods, German film, German history and German philosophical thought, as well as German political and social theory. The interdisciplinary nature of this course aims to develop a broad and profound critical understanding of both French and German history, society and culture while helping you to attain a high level of proficiency in speaking, writing and reading in both languages. Teaching style We use lectures, seminars and small group tutorials to deliver most of the modules on the programme. French and German language modules concentrate on high standards in written, oral and translation skills, and will involve demanding tutorials with experienced native French and German lecturers Assessment We will assess your progress and attainment on all modules you take on both the French and German sections of the programme through a range of techniques including written exams and coursework. The final degree classification you will receive is dependent on which modules you choose to study in the last two years of the programme. Location Located in the heart of London at the Strand Campus, the modern languages centre is close to excellent resources for students, with specialist libraries including the Institut Français, as well as exceptional galleries, theatres and cinemas. Special notes If you take joint honours in French and German your year abroad will usually be split between a French-speaking country and a German-speaking country.
